Recall Information
Recalls
As stated above, materials have standard loan periods, but if someone else in the Bucknell community also needs the item, the loan period is cut short when as the item is recalled. Here are some frequently asked questions concerning recalls.
What is a recall?
A recall is a request by a current Bucknell faculty member, staff member or student for material charged
to another borrower. The policy allows adequate time for the initial
borrower to use the item, but also ensures that a request is satisfied in a timely manner. Items recalled
for the Reserve Room must be returned immediately. All borrower information is confidential and borrowers can recall any item, even if someone else has recalled it from them.
How do I place a recall?
The easiest way to recall an item is to look it up in the online catalog and click on the Recall button that will appear on the item record when an item is checked out. You will need your 8 digits ID number and first 4 digits of your Banner PIN in order to use My Account (your library ID is your SSN preceded by 5 zeroes). Recalls can also be requested at the Circulation Desk. A Bucknell identification card is required to place a
request. It is also helpful to indicate how long we should keep the request active, i.e.. the date when
the item is no longer useful to you. If your request is not filled after two weeks, you will be notified and
be allowed to use interlibrary loan. When the item requested is available, you will be notified by e-mail
or regular mail. Requests are held at the Circulation Desk for seven days.
What happens if an item is recalled?
Extended loan borrowers (faculty, staff, graduate students, and spouses) will be notified of their new
due date. The new due dates will allow five days to return recalled items. A notice will be
sent encouraging the current borrower to return it before the due date if possible. Items
charged to dependents, alumni, consortium or community borrowers are recalled immediately to
accommodate the research needs of our primary users.
Since it is imperative that library materials be accessible to those who need them, people leaving campus
for extended periods are encouraged to return materials to the library in case those items would be
recalled.
What are the overdue procedures/fines?
Follow-up overdue notices and attempted phone calls continue to alert the borrower of escalating fines
and blocking of privileges. Overdue recalled items are assessed fines of $1.00/day/item in addition to
regular overdue fines. Borrowing privileges are also blocked until the recalled item is returned or the
recall is cancelled. The strict policy expresses the commitment of the Bertrand Library to meet the
sometimes conflicting needs of borrowers for library materials.
What other costs may be incurred?
After 30 days recalled books which are not returned will be assumed lost and billed to the user's
account so that a replacement can be purchased.
